About Barclay Barrios

Dr. Barclay Barrios brings more than 25 years of experience to the classroom and the administrative table, combining scholarly depth with a commitment to student success. He currently serves as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Broward Campuses in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, where he oversees the academic journey of more than 4,000 undergraduate students. His role bridges academic policy and student-centered innovation, encompassing everything from curriculum planning to advising strategy and equity initiatives.

Holding a PhD in English from Rutgers University, Dr. Barrios has dedicated his career to exploring the intersections of writing, technology, identity, and pedagogy. His scholarly work spans composition and rhetoric, queer theory, and digital literacies, with publications in Pedagogy, The WAC Journal, and Computers and Composition. He is best known for authoring the textbook Emerging: Contemporary Readings for Writers, now in its fifth edition, which is widely adopted in writing programs nationwide.

Beyond his published work, Dr. Barrios has secured substantial research funding, directed university writing programs, led diversity initiatives, and chaired graduate committees. His leadership is defined by a focus on sustainable academic practices, antiracist pedagogy, and the evolving role of technology in higher education.

In and out of the classroom, he is energized by the pursuit of excellence, whether engaging in critical theory or mastering a new dance step. His intellectual rigor is matched by a creative spirit—reflected in his love for movement, strength training, and baking, rooted in his New Orleans heritage.
